📖 Story & Cast
Story
James Belmont (Brad Pitt) is a retired Special Forces
officer who has spent 30 years in combat zones, carrying both physical and
psychological scars from his service . He lives a solitary life, his only
companion being Odin (played primarily by a dog named Uber), his
retired military working dog—a German Shepherd with titanium teeth and a
prosthetic leg, both reminders of their shared battlefield trauma .
James takes Odin on a peaceful fly-fishing
trip into the Alaskan wilderness. The tranquility is briefly interrupted by a
mysterious stranger named Walter Boone (J.K. Simmons), who shares a beer
and conversation before disappearing into the wild . When an impending storm
forces them to leave early, James suffers a heart attack while piloting his
seaplane, causing the aircraft to crash into a remote lake .
Both James and Odin survive—barely. Stranded 58
miles from the nearest road with limited supplies, they must trek through
unforgiving terrain to reach civilization . Along the way, they face a massive
grizzly bear, a treacherous log crossing over rapids, and a pack
of wolves . Both man and dog suffer debilitating injuries, and James is
forced to use every survival skill he possesses to keep them both alive.
The film is not just a survival story—it's a love
story between a man and his dog, exploring the unbreakable bond forged
through shared trauma and mutual dependence . The emotional climax reveals the
fate of both characters, leaving few dry eyes in the theater .

Odin

Hondo—deliver what critics call "one of the best animal acts ever to play
out in cinema" . Odin's expressive eyes and soulful presence create an
unforgettable character .

Zealand standing in for Alaska, the film's visuals are described as

·
Tense
Survival Setpieces: The bear encounter,
rapids crossing, and wolf attack are described as "nail-biting" and

action .
❌ Negative Points

incident after another, with one reviewer calling it "survival porn"
and another describing the middle section as "walking through the
woods" .
·

story" .

film leans too heavily into sentimentality, with one noting it "falls

·
Underwritten
